Ionian Islands

The Ionian Islands are located on the west coast of Greece, and are some of the most beautiful islands in the country. The islands offer stunning beaches with crystal clear waters, lush green mountains, traditional architecture, and rich cultural heritage. Some of the most famous islands in this group are Corfu, Zakynthos, Kefalonia, Lefkada, and Paxi. Each island has its own unique charm and character, with fascinating history, delicious local cuisine, and numerous activities for visitors to explore. The region is also known for its warm hospitality and friendly locals, making it an ideal place to relax and unwind. From luxury resorts to quaint village guesthouses, the Ionian Islands have something for everyone, and are a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Greece.

How to reach

The Ionian Islands are accessible by air, sea and road.

By air:

Corfu, Kefalonia and Zakynthos have international airports, with direct flights available from many European cities during the peak summer season. During the off-season, flights are available from Athens and other Greek cities to these islands. Lefkada and Paxi do not have airports, but visitors can fly to neighboring airports and then get there by ferry or car.

By sea:

There are several ferry and catamaran connections from various ports in Greece and Italy to the Ionian Islands. Visitors can take the ferry from the port of Patras on the Greek mainland to Corfu or take the ferry from Piraeus port in Athens to Kefalonia, Zakynthos or Lefkada. Additionally, there are also daily ferry connections between the Ionian Islands, which are an excellent way to explore multiple islands in a single trip.

By road:

Visitors can get to the Ionian Islands by car. It’s possible to reach the islands of Lefkada and Corfu by car thanks to the island’s causeway that connects them to the mainland of Greece. Visitors can also reach the other Ionian Islands via road by car or taxi, which involves using the various ports around the islands.

 

Once you arrive at any of the Ionian Islands, you can rent a car, hire a taxi, or use the local buses to explore the area.

LEFKADA

Lefkada is a Greek island located in the Ionian Sea on the west coast of Greece. It is famous for its beautiful scenery, stunning beaches, crystal clear waters, traditional villages, and delicious local cuisine. Lefkada is also connected to mainland Greece by a bridge, making it easily accessible by car.

 

KEFALONIA

Kefalonia is a stunning Greek island located in the Ionian Sea, known for its rugged natural beauty, turquoise waters, picturesque villages, and rich history. The island is the largest in the Ionian group, and offers visitors a diverse range of activities, from hiking in the mountains to swimming in secluded coves and exploring ancient ruins. Kefalonia is also known for its delicious local cuisine, which combines fresh seafood, local meats, and farm-fresh produce to create distinctive and memorable dishes.

 

CORFU

Corfu, also known as Kerkyra, is a picturesque island located in the Ionian Sea off the coast of Greece. With its stunning beaches, lush landscapes, and rich cultural heritage, Corfu offers the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. Visitors can explore the charming capital city, Corfu Town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its colorful architecture, historic fortress, and picturesque streets. Some of the island’s top attractions include the Achilleion Palace, the Paleokastritsa Monastery, and the old fishing village of Kassiopi. Corfu is also famous for its beautiful beaches, such as the secluded Kerasia Beach and the popular Glyfada Beach. 

 

ZAKYNTHOS

Zakynthos, also known as Zante, is a beautiful island located in the Ionian Sea off the west coast of Greece. With its stunning natural beauty, clear blue waters, and rich cultural heritage, Zakynthos has something for everyone. Some of the island’s most popular attractions include the stunning Navagio Beach, located on a secluded cove only reachable by boat, and the Blue Caves, which offer a unique and unforgettable swimming experience. Visitors can also explore the picturesque town of Zakynthos, with its historic architecture, bustling shopping streets, and friendly locals. 

 

 

Apart from the main islands, the Cyclades offer many hidden gems waiting to be explored. Islands like Folegandros, Serifos, and Amorgos offer a more off-the-beaten-path experience, with tranquil beaches, charming villages, and breathtaking views.
